READING

In the 1st semester of reading we will be working on various reading strategies.  The students should be using meaning, structure, and visual clues to decode when reading.  A beginning reader will read books and receive help from pictures.  When reading with your children at home encourage them to read for meaning.  They need to understand that you read books to learn something or find out information.  We will also be working on phrasing and fluency.

In the 2nd semester we will be focusing on fluency.  Our goal for your 2nd grader will be to read on a level22 at 90 wpm by the end of the year.  We will be reading a variety of genres, as well as practicing our fluency by reading reader’s theater skits.  These plays or skits will help the students use expression and phrasing when they read.  Please check back to view vodcasts of your children reading.

All year we will work on vocabulary and comprehension from all level books.  We want our readers to think while they read and read for purpose.

Please have your child read for at least 20 minutes each night.

If your child get stuck on a word you may want to use these strategies:

Start over at the beginning of the sentence.

Get the word started.

What would make sense.

Look for parts you know.
